Name: The Duke
Role: Merchant and cook
Affiliation: Independent; not aligned with any of the Four Lords
Notable Traits: Mysterious, well-informed, fond of food
The Duke is a large, imposing figure who travels with a small stagecoach filled with goods, meats, and cooking supplies. His size and relaxed demeanor contrast sharply with the hostile environment, giving him an almost comforting presence despite his mysterious nature.
While The Duke does not fight directly, he provides several important services to Ethan:
The Duke serves as Ethan’s primary support throughout the game. He appears at key points in the village and within the lords' domains, providing a safe space to restock, upgrade equipment, and prepare for upcoming encounters.
Despite his neutral stance, The Duke seems unusually well-informed about the village, the Four Lords, and Mother Miranda's influence. He even helps at least one villager by providing newspapers from the outside world, defying Miranda's restrictions and hinting at a broader awareness of events beyond the village.
The Duke often comments on food and hunger, famously stating that "To hunger is to be alive," reflecting both his personality and his role as a cook who can grant Ethan permanent stat boosts through special dishes.
